History

Prairie Lakes Church has existed in Cedar Falls, Iowa, for over 150 years. One year after the city of Cedar Falls was incorporated in 1854, a small group of citizens began meeting in rented facilities. On August 14, 1858, the Cedar Falls Baptist Church was officially organized. In 1862, the congregation changed its name to First Baptist Church. The church purchased a building at 5th and Main Street in 1864. In 1900, the church purchased the Methodist Episcopal Church located at 7th and Washington. The old church was demolished to make room for a new facility. The new building was a beautiful brick building that served the congregation for 64 years.

The Next Era

In 1976, the congregation voted to level the old 1900 building and construct a new multi-purpose building. It was dedicated in October, 1977. By 2000, the church was outgrowing its facilities. Soon the congregation purchased 33 acres at the corner of Hudson and Viking Roads and began construction in 2003 on a 55,000 sq. ft. facility. The new Cedar Falls Campus opened in February 2005. At the time of the move, First Baptist Church chose to adopt a new name, Prairie Lakes Church, because of its proximity to Prairie Lakes Park.
