First Baptist Church, 7th & Main, Cedar Falls

Prairie Lakes Church has existed in Cedar Falls, Iowa, for over 150 years. One year after the city of Cedar Falls was incorporated in 1854, a small group of citizens began meeting in rented facilities. This group became known as The Baptist Society. On August 14, 1858, the Cedar Falls Baptist Church was officially organized and twenty charter members were recognized. In 1862, the congregation changed its name to First Baptist Church. The church purchased a building at 5th and Main Street in 1864, which had served Cedar Falls as its first public school. The school was leveled and construction began on a new building. Unfortunately, shortly after the frame was erected, the building collapsed during a wind storm, and one of the workmen was killed. The new building was finally completed in 1865. In 1900, the church purchased the Methodist Episcopal Church located at 7th and Washington. The old church was demolished to make room for a new facility. The new building was a beautiful brick building that served the congregation for 64 years. In 1954, the church added an educational unit and ten years later a new worship center.

In 1976, the congregation voted to level the old 1900 building and construct a new multi-purpose building. This new building included a gym, classrooms, lounge and new offices. It was dedicated in October, 1977. Building on the prayerful foundation of godly men and women, God blessed and grew our church. By 2000, the church was outgrowing its facilities. Soon the congregation purchased 33 acres at the corner of Hudson and Viking Roads and began construction in 2003 on a 55,000 sq. ft. facility. The new Cedar Falls Campus opened in February 2005 and features a 1000-seat Worship Center, Cafe, Chapel and Children's and Student Ministry areas. At the time of the move, First Baptist Church chose to adopt a new name, Prairie Lakes Church, because of its proximity to Prairie Lakes Park. Over the years, much has changed, but our commitment to teaching God’s truth, worshiping together, and influencing our community has remained constant.
